Reuters has reported from Tirana, where Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama dismissed calls for his resignation as thousands of protesters, led by students, smashed windows and clashed with police during unrest. Police responded with water cannons and tear gas.
Reporting directly from the protests, Reuters outlined the grievances driving public anger against Rama’s government.
“There are a lot of angry protesters. They are angry about the lack of employment prospects, low educational standards and, above all, the constant corruption they see among the country’s top government officials.”
Reuters noted that Rama has denied the corruption allegations. It also highlighted the contrast between the current unrest and the large but peaceful demonstrations held during the summer, when protesters felt their voices were not being heard.
Now, they say: enough is enough.
