Russia welcomes a possible intention to reintroduce a request by Serbia for the return of Serbian forces to Kosovo, which is in line with United Nations Security Council (UN) Resolution 1244, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said on Friday.

Zaharova stressed that the initiative of Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic to resolve the situation in Kosovo is the only possible step taken by Belgrade and added that Moscow supports the measures that Vucic presented last week.

Among the measures introduced are demands for fair and free elections, the return of Serbian judges and prosecutors to their duties, the return of Serbs to the police in northern Kosovo, as well as the urgent formation of the Association.

“The initiative of President Vucic suggests that this is the only possible step that Belgrade sees now. We fully support the demands put forward, we welcome the intention to re-introduce the request for the return of Serbian security forces to Kosovo, which is in accordance with UN Security Council Resolution 1244,” said Zakharova at a Eurasian women’s Forum.

Russia maintains that unilateral decisions by Kosovo Prime Minister Albin Kurti should be repealed, including the decision to close Serbian offices, banks and outposts, as well as the decision to ban the use of the Serbian Dinar in Kosovo.
