Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis has arrived in Santorini, accompanied by the Minister of Civil Protection, as a gesture of solidarity for the island affected by the earthquake.

He began his visit – the first since seismologists raised concerns over the increase in intense seismic activity – by inspecting the mobile operations unit sent by the fire brigade.

He then stopped at the island’s hospital and visited the special forces.

“I want to reassure the residents of Santorini and other islands that the state is by their side. It is better to be prepared,” Mitsotakis said.

Thousands of underwater tremors have rocked the island since the weekend, with two earthquakes – measuring 3.8 and 3.9 on the Richter scale – hitting within ten minutes, just before Mitsotakis and his team arrived on the island.

An even stronger earthquake, with a magnitude of 4.8, shook Santorini earlier in the morning, causing further rockslides.

Around 12,000 people – residents, tourists, and workers – have fled the island using every available means to escape.
