U.S. Senator Richard Blumenthal has sent a letter to U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken, emphasizing the threat Serbia has posed to Kosovo over the years. The letter also references the attack that occurred in Banjska in September 2023.

In his letter, Blumenthal recalled NATO’s intervention in 1999 to halt the genocide in Kosovo, stating that Serbia’s expansionist ambitions have never been extinguished.

He expressed particular concern about the possibility that the incoming administration of U.S. President-elect Donald Trump may not be sufficiently committed to fostering peace between Kosovo and Serbia, given Trump’s previous approach toward Russia.

“Given President-elect Trump’s prior approach toward Russia, I fear that the new administration will do very little to encourage peace between Serbia and Kosovo,” wrote the Connecticut senator.

Blumenthal urged Blinken to maintain a strong focus on Kosovo during the transition of power in the United States.

He called for the use of all tools available to the U.S. to ensure that Serbia remains distant and incapable of violating Kosovo’s territory.

“During this transition phase, I urge you to use all available tools to ensure that Serbia is kept at bay and incapable of violating Kosovo’s territory. We also request that you continue dedicated efforts to normalize relations between Kosovo and Serbia and to secure Kosovo’s membership in the UN,” Blumenthal concluded.

The letter comes at a sensitive time for the region, reinforcing the U.S. commitment to peace and stability in the Balkans.
