Donald Trump is set to sign an executive order on Thursday that will impose sanctions on the International Criminal Court (ICC) for targeting the United States and its allies, including Israel, according to multiple reports.
The order is said to impose financial and visa sanctions on individuals and their family members who assist in the ICC’s investigations involving U.S. citizens or its allies.
Since Trump’s inauguration on January 20, ICC officials have been preparing for harsh financial and travel restrictions in response to the ICC’s arrest warrant issued in November against Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former defense minister Yoav Gallant for alleged war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza.
Last week, Senate Democrats blocked a Republican-led effort to impose sanctions on the ICC. The court previously dealt with U.S. sanctions in 2020 when Trump’s first administration imposed travel bans and asset freezes against former prosecutor Fatou Bensouda and one of her senior officials.
