Ukraine and the United States have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), which is seen as an initial step toward a comprehensive economic cooperation agreement between the two countries, Ukrainian Economy Minister Yulia Svyrydenko announced, according to Rks News.
Progress toward this agreement had previously been hindered following a heated public debate in February between U.S. President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky during a meeting at the White House, as reported by British broadcaster BBC.
Minister Svyrydenko shared the news of the memorandum signing on the social media platform X, without providing further details. She included photos of herself and U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent separately signing the document.
“We are pleased to announce the signing, together with our American partners, of a Memorandum of Understanding that paves the way for an Economic Cooperation Agreement and the establishment of an Investment Fund for the Reconstruction of Ukraine,” Svyrydenko wrote.
The signing took place via a virtual meeting with Secretary Bessent, who confirmed that the final details of the agreement are still being worked out.
Meanwhile, President Trump mentioned the deal during a joint press conference with Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni.
“We have a minerals agreement that I believe will be signed on Thursday… next Thursday. Very soon. And I assume they will follow through with the agreement. So we’ll see, but we’ve made a deal on that,” the U.S. President said.
As of now, the White House has not issued an official response regarding the timeline or specific contents of the agreement, Reuters reported.
