Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced on Tuesday that Ukrainian forces have captured two Chinese nationals fighting alongside Russian troops in Donetsk, raising serious questions about China’s claimed neutrality in the ongoing war.
“Our military captured two Chinese citizens who fought in the Russian army. This happened on Ukrainian territory — in the Donetsk region,” Zelensky said in a social media post, sharing video footage of one of the detained individuals. Ukrainian authorities recovered documents, bank cards, and personal data belonging to the two men.
The capture prompted Ukraine to summon China’s top diplomat in Kyiv. In a statement, Deputy Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha stressed that the involvement of Chinese citizens “puts into question China’s declared stance for peace” and undermines its credibility as a permanent member of the UN Security Council.
Kyiv Warns of Broader Chinese Involvement
Zelensky revealed that Ukrainian intelligence suggests there could be “many more Chinese citizens” fighting within Russian military units. “Relevant investigative and operational actions are ongoing,” he said.
China officially claims neutrality in the conflict and insists it is not supplying lethal aid to either side. However, it has maintained strong political and economic ties with Moscow, and NATO recently labeled Beijing a “decisive enabler” of Russia’s invasion.
Zelensky has instructed Ukraine’s foreign minister to urgently contact Beijing for clarification. “The capture of these men and China’s involvement is a clear signal that Putin will do anything but end this war,” Zelensky said.
He also called for a firm response from Ukraine’s allies. “I think the United States should pay more attention to what is happening today,” he urged during a press conference with Belgian Prime Minister Alexander De Croo in Kyiv.
Growing Concerns Over Foreign Fighters
The development comes amid broader concerns about Russia deploying thousands of North Korean troops to support operations in the western Kursk region.
“The North Koreans fought against us in the Kursk region, and now the Chinese are fighting on Ukrainian soil. This is a critical issue we need to discuss urgently with our partners,” Zelensky emphasized.
While Ukraine continues to seek deeper engagement with China—most recently appointing a new ambassador—relations may be tested following this incident.
