The United States and Nigeria have announced the elimination of one of the most senior figures of the ISIS terrorist organization during a joint military operation in the Lake Chad region.
According to U.S. and Nigerian authorities, Abu-Bilal al-Minuki, regarded as one of ISIS’s highest-ranking global leaders, was killed during a coordinated strike on the compound where he was hiding alongside several close associates.
U.S. President Donald Trump described al-Minuki as “the most active terrorist in the world” and the second most important figure within ISIS’s hierarchy. Meanwhile, Nigerian President Bola Tinubu stated that the operation represents a major blow to the extremist group’s activities in Africa.
The Lake Chad region, which spans parts of Nigeria, Chad, Niger, and Cameroon, has long been considered one of the most troubled areas due to the presence of terrorist groups and Islamist militants.
According to international assessments, ISIS’s African branches have become the organization’s primary operational hub, with the majority of its terrorist attacks now taking place in Sub-Saharan Africa.
Abu-Bilal al-Minuki was designated a global terrorist by the United States in 2023, and his name had been linked to the organization of numerous attacks in the region as well as the coordination of ISIS networks across Africa.
