Vucic “Congratulates” Magyar While Serbia Moves in the Opposite Direction

Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić held a phone call with Peter Magyar, congratulating him on his election victory in Hungary a gesture that feels more like diplomatic routine than a reflection of the region’s political reality.

Vučić described the conversation as “important and meaningful,” highlighting discussions on improving Serbian-Hungarian relations. Yet the irony is hard to ignore: Serbia continues to face ongoing criticism for democratic backsliding while simultaneously speaking about “sustainable development” and “regional connectivity.”

Energy issues were also at the center of the talks an area where Belgrade has long tried to balance between the European Union and Russian influence. For a country claiming EU aspirations, this “balancing act” often looks less like strategy and more like hesitation.

Vučić also touched on minority rights and Serbia’s EU path a path that appears open on paper but is frequently obstructed by his own government’s policies. While the rhetoric emphasizes integration, in practice Serbia is repeatedly criticized for a lack of genuine reforms and for drifting toward illiberal models.

In closing, Vučić invited Magyar to visit Serbia a symbolic move at a time when Serbia faces increasing international pressure and growing questions about its political direction.

If this conversation was about a “European future,” the real question remains: is Serbia truly moving toward Europe, or simply using that path as political rhetoric?
