The United States has not abandoned its interest in Greenland, with President Donald Trump continuing to view the acquisition of the island as a strategic priority, despite growing resistance from local authorities.

White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt reiterated the administration’s position on Tuesday, stressing that while no concrete deadline has been set, the president remains firm on the issue.

According to Leavitt, Trump believes that if the United States does not move to acquire Greenland, the island could eventually fall under the influence or control of China or Russia, a development she described as a serious security risk for the U.S., Europe, and Greenland itself.

She added that, in Trump’s view, Greenland’s inclusion within the United States would serve the interests of both sides, offering greater security guarantees and long-term stability for the strategically located Arctic territory.

However, the proposal has been met with strong opposition from Greenland’s local government, which has categorically rejected the idea. In an official statement, Greenlandic authorities declared that they would “under no circumstances” accept U.S. ownership of the island.

Instead, Greenland has announced plans to intensify efforts to ensure its security strictly within the framework of NATO, reaffirming its current status through the Kingdom of Denmark, a NATO member state.

Greenland’s government emphasized that its sovereignty and security will continue to rely on the NATO alliance, firmly rejecting any changes to the island’s political or territorial status.
