After yet another failure to elect the Speaker of the Assembly of Kosovo, Albulena Haxhiu, MP from Vetëvendosje and candidate for the post, has commented on the current situation.

Haxhiu emphasized that since April 15, the Assembly has failed to constitute itself — initially due to the opposition’s refusal to vote on the verification of MPs’ mandates, and now due to the rejection of her nomination for Speaker.

“I’m not very optimistic that the situation will change in tomorrow’s session, as the positions of the opposition parties have been made clear publicly. In my view, there is a lack of willingness to constitute the Assembly and move forward to the procedures for forming the Government,” Haxhiu stated.

She added that the responsibility for constituting the Assembly belongs to all political entities, not just the majority or Vetëvendosje.

However, when it comes to forming the Government, the responsibility lies with the nominee and the winning party.

Haxhiu recalled that the Constitution of Kosovo and the Constitutional Court’s rulings grant only the winning party of the elections the right to propose a candidate for Speaker.

According to her, the opposition is rejecting not only her candidacy but, in some cases, any other potential candidate.

“In this situation, the LDK has declared it will not support either Albulena Haxhiu or any other candidate, while the two other parties have requested different names,” Haxhiu concluded.

In this interview, Haxhiu also addressed other topics, including criticisms from political parties such as PDK, LDK, and AAK.

She also spoke about the political impact that this deadlock in the Assembly is causing.
