Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky stated that he is ready to discuss with U.S. President Donald Trump the possibility of granting the United States access to Ukraine’s rare metals.
In a Telegram post, Zelensky mentioned that urgent diplomatic activities could unfold in the coming weeks, adding that he values his cooperation with Trump.
Next week, Zelensky will attend the Munich Security Conference, where U.S. Vice President Jay Di Vens and Trump’s special envoy for Russia and Ukraine, Keith Kellogg, will also be present, as reported by Politico.
Trump had previously expressed skepticism regarding military support for Ukraine, but later stated he would be open to an agreement, provided Kyiv allows the U.S. to exploit Ukraine’s mineral resources. Zelensky, in an interview with Reuters, said he is open to this idea.
“Americans have helped the most, and therefore they should earn the most, and I would like to discuss this with Trump,” said Zelensky, emphasizing that his idea is not to give the resources to the U.S., but to jointly enter this business.
He also mentioned that Ukraine’s gas storage facilities could be another area for potential cooperation, following Ukraine’s suspension of Russian gas transit to Europe.
“We are ready to sign contracts for the supply of American liquefied gas to Ukraine and become a hub for all of Europe,” Zelensky added.
Trump stated on Friday that he will likely meet with Zelensky next week but also emphasized that he maintains “very good relations” with Russian President Vladimir Putin and is likely to speak with him as well.
