Today marks 29 years since the fall of Luan Haradinaj, one of the early fighters of the Kosovo Liberation Army, who was killed on May 6, 1997, in one of the first battles against Serbian forces at the Albania–Kosovo border.

Luan Haradinaj lost his life during a several-hour clash while leading an expedition group of the KLA attempting to enter Kosovo. On that day, he was alongside his brother Ramush Haradinaj and a group of fighters that included Fehmi Lladrovci, Xhevë Lladrovci, Selim Krasniqi, Ramiz Lladrovci, Abedin Rexha, Ilaz Kodra, Rafet Rama, Gani Rama, Emrush Xhemajli and Ali Ahmeti.

The group had reached near the village of Larë, close to Kushnin of Has, at a place known as “Qafa e Mullarit,” when they fell into an ambush set by Yugoslav forces along the border. In that ambush, Luan Haradinaj was killed, while several others, including Ramush Haradinaj and Fehmi Lladrovci, were wounded.

His body remained buried in Vlanë until the end of the Kosovo War. After the war, he was reburied with honors at the Martyrs’ Cemetery in his hometown of Gllogjan, where he rests alongside other fallen fighters.

Born on November 17, 1973, in Gllogjan, Deçan, Luan Haradinaj completed primary school in Irzniq and high school at “Vëllezërit Frashëri” in Deçan. He later enrolled in the Faculty of Physical Education in Tirana, but did not complete his studies, choosing instead to join the struggle for Kosovo’s liberation.

His legacy remains part of the early resistance and sacrifice that shaped Kosovo’s path to freedom.
