Iran has drafted a protocol with Oman to monitor traffic in the Strait of Hormuz.

Iran’s Deputy Foreign Minister, Kazem Gharibabadi, stated that a protocol is being developed that would allow the country to oversee traffic in the Strait of Hormuz jointly with Oman following the end of the war.

According to state news agencies IRNA and Mehr, Gharibabadi said that previous peacetime rules, which allowed free navigation through the strait, “cannot be expected to apply” during wartime.

Leaders in the United States, European Union, and China have warned against the imposition of tariffs or any monitoring system that would allow Iran to control navigation in the strait, Sky News reports.

Gharibabadi added that even in peacetime, ship movements through the strait would take place under supervision and coordination with Iran and Oman, which are located on either side of this strategic waterway.

“Of course, these requirements do not imply restrictions, but aim to facilitate and ensure safe passage and provide better services for vessels using this route,” he said.
