U.S. President Donald Trump has proposed a historic increase in defense spending, requesting a $1.5 trillion budget from Congress the largest military expansion since World War II.

According to the White House, the proposed budget aims to significantly strengthen U.S. military capabilities, including funding for the advanced “Golden Dome” missile defense system and expanding domestic shipbuilding capacity to counter rising global competition, particularly from China.

The plan allocates approximately $1.1 trillion in discretionary spending for the Pentagon, while an additional $350 billion is designated for the defense industrial base through a fast-track legislative process. It also includes pay raises for troops and major investments in a next-generation naval fleet, referred to by Trump as the “Golden Fleet.”

However, the proposal comes with notable trade-offs. The administration has indicated that increased military spending would be offset by cuts to domestic programs, including climate initiatives, education, and housing. Officials argue these reductions are necessary to eliminate “wasteful” programs and refocus national priorities on defense and security.

The proposal arrives amid heightened global tensions and will require Congressional approval, where it is expected to face intense political debate over balancing national security with domestic needs.
