The Secretary-General of the United Nations, António Guterres, is “deeply concerned” by recent threats against civilian populations, his spokesperson said, as reported by BBC and relayed by Rks News.

Although he did not directly mention U.S. President Donald Trump, the comments from Guterres’ spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric came after Trump warned that “an entire civilization will die tonight,” as the deadline he set for Iran approaches.

Dujarric stated that the UN chief is concerned about remarks “suggesting that entire civilian populations or civilizations could be forced to bear the consequences of political and military decisions.”

“There is no military objective that justifies the mass destruction of a society’s infrastructure or the deliberate infliction of suffering on civilian populations,” he added.

Guterres also believes that war can end “when leaders choose dialogue over destruction” a choice that “still exists.”
