Spain has announced the reopening of its embassy in Tehran, citing what officials describe as a “window for peace” following the recent ceasefire between the United States and Iran.

Spanish Foreign Minister José Manuel Albares confirmed the decision during a parliamentary address on Thursday, emphasizing Madrid’s commitment to diplomatic engagement during a critical phase of de-escalation.

Since the start of the conflict, Spain has taken a notably critical stance toward U.S. military actions in Iran. The government barred Washington from using Spanish military bases for its operations and maintained a firmer position than several of its European allies.

Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez has previously described U.S.-Israeli strikes on Iran as “reckless and unlawful,” stating that Spain “would not be complicit in actions that are harmful to the world.”

The move to return Spain’s ambassador to Tehran has drawn immediate criticism from Israel. Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar accused Madrid of aligning itself with what he described as a “terrorist regime.”

Spain’s decision underscores growing diplomatic efforts in Europe to capitalize on the fragile ceasefire and push for a broader political resolution to the conflict.
