The Acting President of Kosovo, Albulena Haxhiu, has met with two prominent survivors of wartime sexual violence, Vasfije Krasniqi Goodman and Shyhrete Tahiri, who have been appointed as special delegates to advance the rights and recognition of survivors of sexual violence during the war in Kosovo.

Recognition of survivors’ advocacy role

According to the statement, the appointment recognizes the courage and resilience of the two women, who have played a key role in breaking the silence surrounding wartime sexual violence and advocating for justice for victims.

Their testimonies and public engagement have contributed significantly to raising awareness both within Kosovo and internationally, helping transform a previously stigmatized issue into one addressed through institutional and legal frameworks.

Institutional dimension of advocacy

Officials emphasized that their work has now gained an institutional dimension, reflecting a broader effort by Kosovo’s leadership to integrate survivor advocacy into state policy and public institutions.

The meeting also highlighted the importance of continued cooperation between the appointed delegates and government institutions in advancing legal protections, social support, and recognition for survivors.

Ongoing commitment to survivors’ rights

Kosovo authorities reaffirmed their commitment to addressing wartime sexual violence as part of transitional justice efforts and strengthening victims’ rights.

The appointment of Krasniqi Goodman and Tahiri is seen as a step toward ensuring that survivor voices are included in policy-making processes and national and international advocacy.
