The European Commission is expected to present a package of measures today to address the energy consequences of the conflict with Iran, amid warnings of possible aviation fuel shortages in the coming months.

According to draft proposals obtained by Reuters, the European Union aims to reduce electricity taxes and coordinate the filling of gas reserves during the summer, in an effort to ease the impact of the crisis.

The documents show that, for now, the EU will avoid major market interventions such as price caps on gas or windfall taxes on energy companies—measures that were used in 2022 after disruptions in Russian supplies.

Instead, the Commission plans to revise EU fiscal rules to favor electricity over oil and gas, and to make it easier for governments to reduce energy taxes to zero for certain industrial sectors.

The EU is also expected to coordinate member states’ efforts to refill gas storage facilities in the coming months, offering a more unified approach to energy security.

Another key part of the plan is preparation for possible aviation fuel shortages, with the Commission set to issue guidance to governments on how to manage the situation if tensions in the region escalate further.
