A hiker during a walk in a forested area in the Pankow district of Berlin discovered a suspicious object, prompting authorities to launch an investigation that led to the discovery of dozens of artillery shells.
Special forces from the State Criminal Police Office (LKA) were immediately deployed to the scene, where they found a total of 59 unexploded 122 mm Soviet-style shells buried underground.
According to authorities, the ammunition dates back to the Second World War and weighed approximately 1.5 tons in total. Despite the scale of the discovery, police confirmed that there was no risk to civilians at any stage of the operation.
Berlin police even reacted with a touch of humor on social media, writing: “In the Pankow forest, it wasn’t just trees…”
