German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier has stated that Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022 violated Europe’s security architecture, warning that the continent is facing a new era of geopolitical challenges.

In an interview with German public broadcaster ZDF, Steinmeier described Russia’s attack on Ukraine and shifts in U.S. policy as a “double historical turning point,” calling for a realistic approach to international relations.

“Russia, with its attack on Ukraine in 2022, broke the European security architecture,” the German president said.

Referring to the United States, Steinmeier said that the administration of President Donald Trump reflects a change in the perception of traditional values, but stressed that Germany and Europe continue to need their partnership with Washington.

“We need the United States. For Germany and Europe, it is essential to defend the international order, the rule of law, and established rules,” he said.

The German president also expressed concern over the rise of populist and extremist forces, urging citizens to vote responsibly in order to protect democracy.

“When citizens go to the polls, they are not only deciding for a political party, but also whether to preserve the democratic system or open the way for authoritarian alternatives,” Steinmeier stated.

Domestically, he welcomed recent reforms by the federal government in pensions, healthcare, and social security, emphasizing that their success will depend on economic growth and sustainable implementation.
