The United Kingdom government has announced plans to ban Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) as part of emergency legislation aimed at tackling state-backed activities carried out by foreign actors.

Alongside the IRGC, the government intends to add the Islamic Movement of Companions of the Right (IMCR) and the GRU Volunteer Corps, a group linked to Russian military intelligence, to the list of prohibited organizations.

If approved by the British Parliament later this week, individuals who carry out acts of sabotage, including arson or other actions on behalf of these groups, could face life imprisonment under the new measures.

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer said the government would not allow the United Kingdom to be used as a platform by foreign states seeking to spread intimidation, division, and violence.

“We will never allow Britain to become a base of operations for states that seek to spread fear, division and violence on our streets,” Starmer said.

The planned ban comes as London continues to strengthen measures against foreign interference, security threats, and activities allegedly linked to state-backed networks operating inside the UK.
