Ukraine’s parliament, the Verkhovna Rada, has approved the appointment of Serhii Koretskyi as the country’s new Prime Minister.

A total of 289 lawmakers voted in favor of his nomination, giving their backing to the former head of the state-owned energy company Naftogaz.

Koretskyi assumes office without prior political experience, but brings more than two decades of experience in the energy sector and private industry. Before leading Naftogaz, he also served as the head of Ukrnafta, Ukraine’s largest oil company.

Addressing parliament, the new Prime Minister said his government will focus on supplying the armed forces, strengthening the defense industry, maintaining economic stability, and supporting citizens, particularly those living near the front lines.

Preparing for the upcoming winter season and protecting Ukraine’s energy infrastructure are expected to be among the new government’s top priorities, as Russian attacks continue to target the country’s energy facilities.

President Volodymyr Zelensky has also called on the new cabinet to improve the management of international aid and deepen cooperation with Ukraine’s international partners.
