The Ukrainian Parliament (Verkhovna Rada) has officially voted to appoint Serhii Koretskyi as the country’s new Prime Minister.
The appointment is part of a broader government reshuffle initiated by President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, aimed at strengthening the country’s strategic management ahead of another challenging winter.
From Energy Chief to Prime Minister
Koretskyi, who has successfully led the state-owned energy giant Naftogaz since May 2025, was formally nominated by President Zelenskyy on July 15, 2026.
His transition to the premiership went through parliament smoothly and with minimal controversy. Much of the domestic public and media focus remained fixed on the high-profile street protests protesting the sudden dismissal of Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov.
Why Koretskyi?
Political analysts and government officials point to Koretskyi’s deep expertise in the energy sector as the primary driver behind his nomination:
- Valuable Expertise: David Arakhamia, the leader of Zelenskyy’s ruling party faction in parliament, emphasized that Koretskyi’s extensive background in energy infrastructure will be “invaluable” for the state.
- The Winter Threat: The political transition occurs at a highly critical moment. Russian forces continue to target Ukraine’s power grid and municipal utility facilities, triggering blackouts and heating concerns in several metropolitan areas. Koretskyi’s primary mandate will be protecting and stabilizing the energy grid before winter sets in.
