A Russian missile strike on a grain vessel near Ukraine’s southern port of Odesa has killed 13 people, Ukrainian authorities said on Sunday. It was the deadliest attack in the Black Sea in recent weeks.
Russia struck the Golden Leo — a Guinea-Bissau-flagged cargo ship carrying a crew from India and Syria — with three cruise missiles on Sunday, causing a fire, the Ukrainian Navy said in a post on the Telegram messaging app.
A witness told Reuters in Odesa that they saw smoke rising from a vessel near the coastline on Sunday, which Reuters confirmed was the Golden Leo.
Shortly afterward, a second major incident was reported at the Caspian Pipeline Consortium (CPC) terminal in Novorossiysk, Russia. The Liberian-flagged, Greek-owned tanker NISSOS IOS was reportedly struck by unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) while loading crude oil.
EOS Risk reported that loading operations were immediately suspended, while the vessel suffered significant damage to its accommodation areas, bridge, navigation equipment, mechanical systems, and auxiliary facilities.
