The office of the President of the European Parliament, Roberta Metsola, told Gazeta Express that it has no comment regarding the statement made by Serbian Minister Snežana Paunović, who recently said that if she had been in the position of Slobodan Milošević, she would have started the “ethnic cleansing of Kosovo in 1998.”
“Thank you for your questions; however, we do not have a comment to make on this matter,” said Juri Laas, spokesperson for the President of the European Parliament.
Regarding the European Parliament’s position on Serbia and Kosovo, Laas referred to the institution’s latest resolutions.
“I refer you to the latest European Parliament resolutions on Serbia and Kosovo regarding the Parliament’s position,” Laas stated.
However, Paunović’s remarks have drawn strong criticism from European Commissioner for Enlargement Marta Kos. The Slovenian politician said she was surprised that Paunović continues to remain a government minister.
Official Washington has also called on political actors to contribute to peace, stressing that this remains the United States’ objective for the Western Balkans. The U.S. State Department emphasized that the normalization of relations between Kosovo and Serbia is essential to achieving lasting peace in the region.
