Acting President of Kosovo Albulena Haxhiu has announced that she will set the date for the constitutive session of the Kosovo Assembly on Friday, with the session expected to take place during the first week of August.
Speaking late Tuesday in Prizren, Haxhiu said she delayed scheduling the session to allow political parties more time to negotiate a possible agreement on the election of the country’s president.
“The session will be held in the first week of August, and on Friday I believe I will announce the exact date when it will take place,” Haxhiu said.
She said she welcomed the talks held between Prime Minister Albin Kurti, who also leads the Vetëvendosje Movement, and representatives of opposition parties, including the Democratic Party of Kosovo (PDK) and the Democratic League of Kosovo (LDK).
Haxhiu noted that discussions with LDK had been suspended due to internal developments within the party, but stressed that negotiations should resume as soon as possible in order to reach an agreement on the issue of the president.
“I have supported and welcomed the meetings that have taken place between Prime Minister Kurti and the parties. It is important that these talks continue as soon as possible so that an agreement can be reached regarding the president,” she said.
However, Haxhiu rejected claims that Kurti and LDK leader Lumir Abdixhiku had reached a deal on forming institutions, including an agreement over the presidency.
“There has been no agreement. If there had been one, we would certainly have made it public,” Haxhiu said.
She explained that the meeting was attended by Kurti and Finance Minister Hekuran Murati on one side, and Abdixhiku and President Vjosa Osmani-Sadriu on the other.
“There were discussions about the path forward, but there was no agreement,” Haxhiu added.
The formation of Kosovo’s new institutions remains dependent on securing political consensus, particularly over the election of the president, which requires broad parliamentary support.
