Prime Minister Albin Kurti has once again addressed the electoral process and the verdict against the four former leaders of the Kosovo Liberation Army (KLA) in The Hague.

Speaking at a meeting of the General Council of the Vetëvendosje Movement, Kurti said that going to elections had proven to be pointless. However, he argued that, given the circumstances created following the verdict against Hashim Thaçi, Jakup Krasniqi, Kadri Veseli and Rexhep Selimi, avoiding elections had become even more important.

He described the verdict as unjust from both a legal and moral perspective, as well as historically and factually inaccurate.

“Going to elections proved to be pointless, but this time, not going to them was even more important given the context created following the verdict against the four former KLA leaders, Hashim Thaçi, Jakup Krasniqi, Kadri Veseli and Rexhep Selimi. This verdict is legally and morally unjust, and historically and factually inaccurate. In circumstances of such injustice, which generated considerable anger and dissatisfaction, as a state we had a responsibility both to address and respond to this decision and to manage the situation involving dissatisfied citizens,” Kurti stated.

Kurti added that the verdict must be changed and corrected at the appeals stage.

“This verdict must absolutely be changed and corrected at the Appeals Chamber, and as soon as possible. Meanwhile, as a Government, we have approved the establishment of a Working Group tasked with drafting and harmonising the State Strategy concerning appeal proceedings before the Kosovo Specialist Chambers in The Hague. The group includes representatives of the country’s institutions and representatives of parliamentary political parties, under the leadership of Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and Diaspora, Glauk Konjufca,” he stated.
