The Food and Veterinary Agency (FVA) has destroyed 5.56 tonnes of corn originating from Serbia after laboratory tests confirmed that it contained levels of Aflatoxin B1 exceeding the permitted limits.

According to the FVA’s announcement, the measure was carried out at three businesses. At “Agro Com” LLC in Fushë Kosovë, 3,270 kilograms of corn were destroyed; at “Thermo-1” LLC in Prugoc, Pristina, 1,040 kilograms were disposed of; while 1,250 kilograms were destroyed at NTP “Te Hysi” in Shtime.

The destruction of the total quantity of 5,560 kilograms was carried out on October 29, 2026, under the supervision of FVA inspectors.

Aflatoxin B1 is a toxin produced by certain types of mould that can contaminate cereals, particularly corn. Prolonged exposure can cause liver damage and increase the risk of developing cancer.

The FVA has warned that, through contaminated animal feed, this toxin can be converted into Aflatoxin M1 and enter milk, potentially posing a risk to consumer health.

The Agency has urged farmers, producers and traders to ensure the origin and traceability of their products, follow proper storage conditions, and refrain from using or trading corn containing Aflatoxin B1 levels above the permitted limits.
