The United States and Saudi Arabia are expected to announce a new civil nuclear cooperation agreement, paving the way for the Kingdom to develop its nuclear energy sector for the first time.
According to officials familiar with the negotiations, the agreement would allow American companies to participate in the construction and operation of nuclear power plants in Saudi Arabia.
The deal could also enable Saudi Arabia to develop fuel production capabilities needed to supply its future nuclear reactors, although the technical details and the companies involved have not yet been disclosed.
Before it can be fully implemented, the agreement is expected to undergo consultations with the U.S. Congress, in line with legal requirements governing international nuclear cooperation.
