Kosovo’s Acting Prime Minister Albin Kurti said authorities believe a recently discovered burial site in Zubin Potok appears to be a mass grave, with initial suspicions pointing to the remains of a group of intellectuals from Mitrovica who disappeared during the 1999 Kosovo war.
Speaking about the ongoing excavation, Kurti stressed that the identification process remains underway and that official confirmation must come from the relevant forensic and judicial institutions.
“We will wait for the competent institutions to provide us with the results. Our immediate suspicion has been that these are the members of the group of intellectuals who were abducted and forcibly disappeared. We cannot confirm that at this stage, but that was our initial assumption. We must wait for our institutions to complete their work. It appears that we have a mass grave,” Kurti said.
Kosovo authorities are continuing forensic examinations at the site following the court-authorized exhumation. The excavation is part of an ongoing investigation led by the Special Prosecution Office into suspected war crimes and the fate of persons who disappeared during the conflict.
If confirmed, the discovery would mark another significant development in efforts to locate and identify victims who remain missing more than two decades after the Kosovo war.
