Volodymyr Zelensky’s first official visit to Serbia comes at a sensitive moment, revealing once again how Belgrade continues to mix diplomacy with political messaging.
Aleksandar Vučić highlighted that Ukraine does not recognize Kosovo and has never invited Kosovo representatives to its summits, presenting this as a point of respect toward Serbia. However, instead of focusing on Ukraine’s fight against Russian aggression, Vučić once again placed Kosovo at the center of the conversation to strengthen Serbia’s own political narrative.
At the same time, Serbia continues to position itself as a country seeking EU membership while refusing to align with European sanctions against Russia and maintaining close relations with Moscow.
Belgrade wants the benefits of cooperation with the West while keeping its traditional ties with Russia — a balancing strategy that increasingly raises questions about Serbia’s real strategic direction.
