Croatian Prime Minister Andrej Plenković announced an increase in veterans’ pensions during his speech in Knin at the commemoration of Victory Day and the 31st anniversary of Operation Storm. The measure will benefit around 200,000 Croatian war veterans, police officers, soldiers, and other authorized personnel, with an estimated annual cost of around €100 million.
Earlier that morning, Veterans Affairs Minister Tomo Medved presented the key elements of proposed amendments to the Croatian Veterans Act and the Act on Pension Insurance Rights of Active Military Personnel and Authorized Officials. The changes will also abolish the pension reductions that were introduced in 2002.
The proposed amendments will cover a total of 210,304 beneficiaries, representing around 76% of all Croatian veterans and their family members who currently receive pensions.
The new laws are expected to enter into force on January 1, 2027. According to Minister Medved, an additional €88.5 million annually will be allocated from the state budget to implement these legislative changes.
