Acting President Albulena Haxhiu has said it is important for meetings between the political parties to continue over the election of a new president, and announced that she may refer the issue of her mandate to the Constitutional Court if Kosovo remains without a president after October 6.
Haxhiu noted that only a few days remain before the deadline for electing the president expires. According to her, following the September 16 verdict against former KLA leaders, there is no reason for the country to knowingly head toward early elections.
Haxhiu said she is considering referring the issue to the Constitutional Court to address her mandate if the country remains without a president after October 6. She criticized the court, saying that it has assumed the role of “writing the Constitution” and has introduced provisions that, in her view, are not contained in the Constitution.
If a new president is not elected by October 6, Kosovo will hold early parliamentary elections within 45 days. Such elections would be the third consecutive parliamentary election in less than a year.
