Only two days remain until the constitutional deadline for electing the President of the Republic of Kosovo expires, while parliamentary political parties continue their efforts to reach an agreement on the matter.

Meanwhile, yesterday’s political developments focused on meetings between party leaders, although their efforts have not yet resulted in an agreement on the president.

On Saturday, Vetëvendosje leader Albin Kurti held separate meetings with the leaders of the two largest opposition parties: Bedri Hamza of the Democratic Party of Kosovo (PDK) and Lumir Abdixhiku of the Democratic League of Kosovo (LDK).

In addition to the issue of the president, the PDK is insisting that the Draft Law on Amendments to the Law on the Specialist Chambers, submitted by the government on Friday, also be approved by the Assembly of Kosovo in both readings by October 6.

According to the deadline set by the Constitutional Court, the process of electing the new president must be completed by October 6.

Over the past two years, Kosovo has held three elections. All three were parliamentary elections for the Assembly of the Republic of Kosovo, KosovaPress reports.

The elections of February 9, 2025, did not result in the formation of a government, while the second elections, held on December 28, 2025, ended in an institutional deadlock over the election of a president and eventually led to the dissolution of parliament in April. As a result, a third election was held on June 7, 2026.

Meanwhile, in a ruling issued on September 23, the Constitutional Court of Kosovo clarified that the 60-day deadline for electing the president began on August 8, the day the Assembly was constituted, and expires on October 6.

The country could once again head to elections by November 15 if a president is not elected by October 6.
