Kosovo’s Minister of Internal Affairs, Xhelal Sveçla, has met with Andrea Taurelli Salimbeni, head of the General Command of Italy’s Carabinieri, during an official visit to Italy, with discussions focusing on security cooperation and plans to establish a Kosovo Gendarmerie.
Sveçla said the meeting addressed the security situation in Kosovo and the role of Italian Carabinieri personnel in the country.
The two officials also exchanged views on Kosovo’s plans to establish its own gendarmerie, which the government considers a priority.
“Since the establishment and development of the Gendarmerie of the Republic of Kosovo is a government priority, we exchanged views on opportunities to deepen cooperation, particularly through the exchange of experience and professional expertise, with the aim of building this important security component in line with the highest standards and best practices,” Sveçla wrote.
The meeting signals Kosovo’s interest in drawing on Italy’s experience and professional expertise as it advances plans to develop the proposed security institution.
