Kosovo’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Justice, Donika Gërvalla, has met with Austria’s Ambassador to Kosovo, Georg Schnetzer, to discuss strengthening bilateral cooperation in the justice sector and advancing institutional reforms.

In a statement following the meeting, Gërvalla described judicial reform as a clear agenda for transforming the justice system, strengthening institutional integrity and ensuring accountability before the law.

She highlighted several key priorities, including the establishment and operationalization of the Bureau, advancing the vetting process, progressing the package of draft laws on judicial reform and finalizing civil legislation.

“These efforts are aimed at building stronger institutions, ensuring genuine accountability and demonstrating that no one, regardless of their name, position or power, stands above the law,” Gërvalla wrote.

Strengthening Judicial Cooperation with Austria

The discussions also focused on finalizing an agreement with Austria on judicial cooperation in criminal matters.

According to Gërvalla, the agreement would represent an important step towards strengthening international legal cooperation, particularly in extradition, mutual legal assistance and the transfer of sentenced persons.

She emphasized that Austria remains an important partner for Kosovo, adding that deeper cooperation between the institutions of both countries would help strengthen state capacities, advance reforms and consolidate the rule of law.

The meeting comes as Kosovo continues to pursue reforms aimed at improving the integrity, accountability and effectiveness of its justice system.
