Marko Kričak, head of Serbia’s Criminal Police Directorate, was arrested early Sunday morning on the orders of the Higher Public Prosecutor’s Office in Belgrade, on suspicion of abuse of official position.

Bosko Sekulović, head of the Criminal Suppression Service, was also detained alongside him. According to media reports, the detentions are linked to a criminal complaint filed by the lawyer representing Veselin Milić, Deputy Director of the Police and former head of the Belgrade Police Department.

At the centre of the case is the investigation into the murder of Aleksandar Nešović, known as “Baja”, at Restaurant 27 in the Senjak neighbourhood of Belgrade. The police operation following the murder was led by Kričak, while Milić was also named in the initial police report.

Kričak is now suspected of falsifying evidence and exerting pressure on witnesses for the accused, allegedly in an attempt to manipulate the facts to fit a predetermined version of events. If proven, these actions would constitute serious interference in a murder investigation and undermine the credibility of the institutions responsible for combating organised crime.

Nešović, who reportedly had connections to the criminal group led by Dejan Stojanović, known as “Keka”, was murdered in May.

According to the version presented by the prosecution, on 12 May, at approximately 11:00 p.m., he arrived near the restaurant in an armoured BMW X7. Milić had allegedly invited him to the meeting and suggested that he come without security personnel.

Media reports indicate that Nešović initially hesitated to enter the restaurant after noticing vehicles belonging to several of the suspects. However, following a phone call from Saša V., with whom he had previously been involved in a dispute, he returned and sat at the same table with him, Mario S. and Milić.

The prosecution suspects that, following an argument, Saša V. fired several shots at Nešović. According to investigators, the firearm had been obtained by Danka V., who handed it over to Mario S., who allegedly passed it on to Saša V.

In connection with the case, Saša V., 48, and Mario S., 46, are suspected of aggravated murder, firearms-related offences and causing public danger. Danka V., 42, faces charges related to firearms, while several other individuals are suspected of failing to report the crime and assisting the perpetrators.

According to the prosecution, following the shooting, Dejan S. helped the suspects escape by car towards Šabac, Lake Dobrodol and subsequently Stara Pazova.

Nešović’s disappearance was reported by his partner after he had informed her that he was at the restaurant, shortly before his phone was switched off.

Media reports suggest that the meeting had been organised as an attempt to reconcile Nešović and Saša V. However, the new allegations against the officials who led the investigation have raised serious questions about the handling of evidence and the integrity of the investigative process.
