Kosovo Assembly Speaker Albulena Haxhiu has called for the Special Prosecution to take charge of investigating the murder of Arlinda Zekaj, including examining the actions and possible failures of public officials involved in the case.

Speaking after a meeting of the Assembly Presidency, Haxhiu addressed the work of the parliamentary investigative commission established following Zekaj’s killing.

She said she would provide the commission with full support in carrying out its mandate and called on all officials summoned to testify to appear and respond to its requests.

Haxhiu stressed that the parliamentary commission should serve as an additional oversight mechanism, while the criminal investigation should be conducted by the competent prosecution authorities.

“The prosecution should undoubtedly investigate this case. More specifically, the Special Prosecution should be engaged in examining the actions, omissions or wrongful actions of every official in connection with the tragic murder of Arlinda Zekaj,” Haxhiu said.

She added that the commission would prepare a final report documenting its findings and submit it to the responsible prosecution office.

Haxhiu said she hoped the case would be handled by the Special Prosecution because it involves senior officials, including chief prosecutors, prosecutors, police officers and representatives of other state institutions.

She argued that investigating the conduct of these officials falls within the remit of the Special Prosecution.

The parliamentary commission is expected to examine the institutional procedures and decisions surrounding the case, while the criminal investigation will determine whether any individuals bear legal responsibility.
