In front of the police station in Gračanica, near Pristina, a protest was organized on August 9 against domestic violence, where participants asserted that violence is not a private matter and that society and institutions must do more about it.

The organizer of the protest, activist and representative of the non-governmental organization “Pravo na pravo,” Millica Stojanović-Kostić, declared that femicide should be punished with life imprisonment.

“Finally, we must wake up and understand that violence cannot and is not a private matter. When we see or hear that someone is committing violence against someone else, we must report it immediately to the police,” she said, according to REL.

The protest in Gračanica was held following the death of a woman from the Gračanica municipality on August 2, after severe bodily injuries suspected to have been inflicted by her husband.

The suspect, her husband, was arrested for domestic violence, but following his wife’s death, the prosecution has reclassified the case as a serious murder, and he is now in pre-trial detention.
