Ukrainian General Oleksandr Syrskyi stated that Ukraine had captured 594 Russian soldiers during its operation in the Kursk region, revealing this figure for the first time.
Ukraine also captured 100 settlements during its three-month incursion, he said. Moscow’s troops were attempting to counterattack in the area and encircle Kiev’s forces, but these efforts were being repelled, he added.
The Guardian, which reported this news, stated that it was unable to independently verify the figures provided by Syrskyi.
He mentioned that one of the goals of the Kursk operation was to divert Russian forces from other areas, mainly away from Pokrovsk and Kurakhove.
“The Kursk operation diverted a significant number of their forces,” he said, noting that Russian troops had withdrawn from southern Ukraine.
“So far, we can say that around 30,000 soldiers have been sent to the Kursk front, and this number is increasing.”
In Pokrovsk, a coal mining town of strategic military importance as a transport hub where Russia has recently advanced, Syrskyi said that Russia was attempting to disrupt Ukraine’s supply lines on the front.
“The situation on the Pokrovsk front is quite difficult… the enemy is using its advantage in personnel, weapons, and military equipment, actively employing artillery and aviation,” he said.
