The leaders of the G7, the group of seven most industrialized countries, assured Ukraine of their “unswerving support” as Kyiv continues to face Russia’s invasion, which is approaching its 1,000th day.

Russia is “the only obstacle to a just and lasting peace,” said the G7 leaders in a joint statement on November 16. They stated that their countries would continue supporting Ukraine “for as long as necessary.”

The statement was released by Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, whose country is leading the G7 this year.

In addition to Italy, the G7 includes the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, France, Japan, and Germany.

Russia began its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, and currently controls nearly one-fifth of Ukrainian territory.

The G7 statement also highlighted the immense suffering of the Ukrainian people but reiterated that they are determined to protect their state and culture, according to the report from REL.

Earlier on Saturday, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky stated that his country seeks to end the war through diplomacy.
