The recent tragic incident in Ibër Lepenc, although it did not cause the intended damage to Kosovo’s economy, revealed that the threat in the northern region remains ever-present.
In an interview with A2, Kosovo’s Minister of Defense, Ejup Maqedonci, provided detailed insights into the actions being taken to investigate this terrorist attack.
According to Maqedonci, this was the most severe act, alongside the one that occurred a year ago. Both incidents demonstrate to the world that Serbia must change its political approach, as it remains a threat not only to Kosovo but to the entire region.
Maqedonci further explained that the north no longer has parallel structures, illegal finances, or criminal gangs, which is why terrorist acts are being carried out in such forms. What makes this situation more alarming for the international community is the fact that it occurred during the same days Russia carried out similar acts in Ukraine. The signs and weapons found in the Russian military indicate that the inspiration for these acts comes from Russia.
When asked whether Kosovo is at risk of further terrorist attacks, Maqedonci responded: “Serbia has a hegemonic and aggressive approach towards Kosovo. Unfortunately, this approach continues. The militarization Serbia has carried out in the southern part of the country and its support for structures that have carried out criminal and terrorist activities continue to remain a threat to Kosovo. The international community must increase pressure on condemning and holding accountable the Radojčić group, as well as changing Serbia’s political approach towards the Republic of Kosovo. Serbian politics continues to dream of and see itself as hegemonic in the Western Balkans.”
