Maia Sandu, who officially began her second term as President of Moldova today, hailed her renewed mandate as a pro-European choice made by voters “despite pressures” and suspicions of Russian interference in the presidential elections.
“We can take pride in the fact that, despite the challenges, we have managed to be on the right side of history and defend democracy from external threats,” Sandu stated during her inauguration.
After taking the oath of office, she emphasized that Moldova’s November elections represented “a clear direction for the country to become a European state, bringing greater security and prosperity.”
In 2020, Maia Sandu became the first woman to lead Moldova, a country navigating its position between NATO and Russia’s sphere of influence.
