European Union foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas has acknowledged that former U.S. President Donald Trump was correct in criticizing the EU for not investing enough in defense.
“Europe’s failure to invest in military capabilities sends a dangerous signal to aggressors,” Kallas stated during her speech at the annual European Defence Agency conference.
Warning About Weakness
“Weakness invites them in,” Kallas emphasized, as reported by the BBC and Gazeta Express.
She also pointed to Russian President Vladimir Putin, saying that for a long time, alternatives were offered to him in hopes he would prioritize cooperation and economic prosperity for his people over “deceptive imperial ambitions.”
“Instead, Russia’s defense industry is mass-producing tanks, glide bombs, and artillery shells,” she added, underlining the urgent need for Europe to bolster its military capacities.
Trump’s Criticism Revisited
Trump had previously criticized European nations for underfunding their defense budgets, stating he would “encourage” Russia to do as it pleases with European allies if they did not increase defense spending.
Kallas’s remarks reflect growing concerns in Europe about the implications of insufficient defense investments amid escalating global tensions.
