A new and more equal approach is expected from Danish diplomat Peter Sorensen, the successor to the European Union’s special representative for the Kosovo-Serbia dialogue, Miroslav Lajcak. However, according to analysts, the EU should redesign the entire dialogue process, not just change the names facilitating it.

EU ambassadors confirmed Sorensen’s appointment on Friday for the position of special representative. The final approval is expected to be given by the EU foreign ministers on Monday, allowing him to begin his mandate in early February.

Sorensen was chosen by the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Kaja Kallas.

The mandate of the current EU envoy for dialogue, Miroslav Lajcak, will end on January 31.

Under Lajcak’s leadership, Kosovo and Serbia reached the Brussels Basic Agreement and the Ohrid Annex in 2023, though they have yet to be implemented.

Kosovo and Serbia have been in dialogue to normalize their relations since 2011.
