The U.S. tariffs on imports from China, Mexico, and Canada have gone into effect.

U.S. President Donald Trump announced a 25% tariff on Canada and Mexico, and a 20% tariff on China – doubling the tariff against China from the previous month.

Canada has said it will retaliate with a 25% tariff on U.S. goods worth $150 billion, while Mexico and China have also vowed to retaliate.

China’s Ministry of Finance has announced it will impose a 15% tariff on certain agricultural imports from the U.S., including chicken, wheat, corn, and cotton.

It has also imposed a 10% tariff on other products such as soybeans, pork, beef, fruits, vegetables, and dairy products.

These tariffs will take effect on March 10.

Canada has also pledged to retaliate with a 25% tariff on U.S. goods worth $155 billion.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said Canada will initially target products worth $30 billion and will target the remaining $125 billion over the next 21 days.

“There is no justification for [the U.S.] actions… Canada will not leave this unjustified decision unanswered,” Trudeau said.

Any new duties imposed by Canada will remain in place “until the U.S. trade action is withdrawn,” he added, noting that his country will follow “non-tariff measures” if the U.S. tariffs do not cease – without specifying what those measures would be.
