Following past unrest in northern Kosovo, the German Bundestag has approved the use of tear gas for its KFOR troops stationed in the region.
The decision comes after complaints from soldiers that they lacked non-lethal defense measures. The German defense ministry has now authorized trained personnel to carry tear gas while on patrol.
The Bundestag welcomed the move, emphasizing the need for proportional responses to security threats. Germany has been part of KFOR for 25 years, with troop numbers increasing in 2024 due to rising tensions in the Kosovo-Serbia border area.
