U.S. Vice President JD Vance has described Washington’s efforts to bring the conflict with Iran to an end as a highly complex process, acknowledging that negotiations have faced multiple obstacles and setbacks.
In an interview, Vance said he was prepared to take responsibility for efforts aimed at reaching a positive resolution to the conflict.
“If they want me to take responsibility for efforts to bring this war to a positive conclusion, I’m willing to do that,” Vance said.
He stressed that negotiations do not follow a straightforward path, with progress often accompanied by setbacks.
“Sometimes we take one step forward, two steps back, then three steps forward and one step back,” Vance said, noting that this can make it difficult for the American public to assess whether meaningful progress is being made.
The vice president also pointed to divisions within Iran’s political system, describing the situation as particularly complicated.
“Their system is fragmented. There are people who want to end the war, but there are also extremist elements who want to continue it,” Vance said.
He added that the U.S. administration’s task is to navigate the complex situation while seeking what it considers the best possible outcome for the American people and the United States.
