US to Replace Balkans Envoy with Colleen Hyland, Former Kosovo Ambassador
According to sources reported by Al Jazeera on March 14, 2025, Alexander “Sasha” Kasanof will no longer serve as the U.S. Deputy Assistant Secretary for the Western Balkans. Kasanof will be replaced by Colleen Hyland, who previously led the U.S. Directorate for Central and Southern European Affairs.
Hyland’s appointment is significant, as she brings substantial diplomatic experience to the role. Notably, Hyland served as the Deputy Ambassador to the U.S. Embassy in Kosovo from 2016 to 2019, and she is fluent in Albanian, making her well-positioned to engage effectively with the region.
Until now, Kasanof has held this position since July 2024, following his replacement of Gabriel Escobar.
This transition reflects ongoing shifts in U.S. diplomatic efforts in the Balkans, as the region continues to play a critical role in European security and stability.
